Checking in from Guanajuato

October 4, 2010

Hola familia this is Elder Price checking in again from here in Guanajuato. This week has been a pretty good one for us. Tuesday was the "Dia de Alhondiga" which is a pretty crazy day here we found out. On this day 200 years ago, the Mexican rebels took control of a building called the Alhondiga. This was a pretty important battle here so they were sure celebrating it. They had a huge parade that went for like 2 hours that included just about all of the police and military forces for the state of Guanajuato. Pretty much everyone in the whole city went down to watch it so it made missionary work a bit difficult especially to get from one end of the city to the other haha. It wasn’t too bad though because also this day, we had the baptism of Angeles and her son Fransisco. So we were able to clean the baptismal font and get everything ready. It was really awesome though to be able to baptize them because more than anyone I’ve found so far, they really needed the gospel in their lives. They are doing good as well after the baptism and were able to go to some of the general conference sessions. Another blessing that came from the baptism was a new opportunity for teaching. Right after the baptism, there was a relief society activity scheduled and a member in the ward brought her friend to go to the activity but since we were having the baptism, the friend came in and watched. After the baptism she told us she wanted to meet with us some more and find out more about what we do. So we went over the next day with her (it’s also really nice because she lives right next to the member) and talked with her about the church and baptism. She had more questions than any person I think I have ever taught, but I think we were able to answer them all, better yet though is she told us she would like to be baptized! So that was really awesome as well. She also went to the general conference and was able to strengthen her desire to be baptized in that way. There were a few more people who went to the conference as well including the daughter of a recent convert and her 12 year old son. I really decided that conference can be a really good missionary tool because the messages all tell more about what we believe in, and it also is a great place to feel the Spirit. The conference was really good and we had the opportunity to attend all of the sessions. What a blessing it is that we have the opportunity to listen to a prophet speak to us. As well, what a blessing it is that we have technology that enables us to watch the conference by satellite at the same time as all of you back at home and many millions of people all across the world. It seemed like a big theme of the conference was agency and the importance of using agency to do good. I really liked Pres. Monson`s talk in the priesthood session about making choices and I had the scripture come to my mind which goes something like "choose ye this day who ye will serve" and as well I was thinking and we really only have 2 choices of who we will serve. We can either serve God, or we can serve the Devil. There is no middle ground in this. Every choice we make, we choose to either follow God more or follow the Devil. As well, Pres. Monson said that the Devil often seeks to destroy the elect. This really is true and sadly enough we see that quote a bit as there are people who have been faithful members for many years and in some cases, branch presidents, but they have fallen in traps of the Devil. So we would all be wise to check our pride and make sure we know who we really are going to serve. Well family, I sure hope you all are doing well. Know that I love you all and that the church is true.

Love,
Elder Price
